Poker is a card game played in homes, casinos, and poker clubs around the world. Although many variations of the game are available, the basic rules remain unchanged.
To start, each player is dealt a single card face up, with the exception of a jack which is given to the first player. The player to the left of the dealer is the first to deal, with the dealer getting the last right to shuffle.
Depending on the game, the ante will vary. The ante is typically the minimum amount of money a player must contribute to the pot.
Aside from the ante, each player is also required to make a minimum bet. Some games have fixed limits, while others allow a player to bet up to a certain percentage of their bankroll, based on their previous play.
The best hand in poker is a straight flush with five cards of the same suit. This is considered the granddaddy of all hands, but the straight flush isn’t always a sure thing.
A hand that is worth a mention is the Royal Flush, which is the best possible combination of a straight flush, an ace, and a pair of kings. A high card is the icing on the cake, but it might not wrap around the K-A-2-2-3-4 suit.
In some games, the aces are treated as the lowest card. One may even bet the aces.
Other poker variants use multiple packs, some of which contain jokers.
